Madison County Jail Roster

The Madison County, Indiana Jail Roster is a public resource that allows anyone to check who is currently in custody at the county jail. Public information about current and recently released inmates can be found on the MadisonINCourt.us website. Additional data is available through the official website of the Madison County Sheriff's Office, by phone, or during a personal visit to the jail. The roster enables the public to learn the detainee's name, charges, booking date, and custody status. This list is maintained by the Madison County Sheriff's Office and is updated regularly; it is hosted on the county's web resources.

Search Current Inmates in Madison Jail

Start with an online search — it's the fastest way. Below is a step-by-step guide for each method.

Online Search

  1. Go to MadisonINCourt.us to find public information on court cases and related inmate records.
  2. To search court cases, use the MyCase Indiana Courts portal — enter the last name or case number.
  3. If the person has already been transferred to a state facility, check the Indiana Department of Correction database.
  4. To receive notifications about changes in an inmate's status, register with the Indiana SAVIN system.

The jail roster is usually displayed as a list that can be viewed or filtered by last name. If there is no search field on the page, use the browser's Ctrl+F function (or Cmd+F on Mac) to quickly find the desired name.

What You Need for the Search

  • The detainee's full legal last name (first name — if possible)
  • Booking number, if you know it

Records of juvenile offenders are not displayed in the public roster.

By Phone

Call the jail or the sheriff's dispatch non-emergency line. The operator can confirm whether a specific person is in custody if you provide the full name or booking number.

In-Person Visit

Visit the jail lobby during business hours. The staff at the information window will provide information about current inmates.

Find Madison Jail Booking Records Online

A booking record is created at the moment a detained person is officially registered in the jail. It is the first document that records the fact of a person's custody.

During booking, the following data is generated:

  • Unique booking number
  • Date and time of admission to the facility
  • List of charges
  • Name of the agency that made the arrest (city police, state patrol, sheriff's office, etc.)
  • Basic identification data of the detainee — name, date of birth, gender

Access to these records online is available in several ways. The jail roster on the sheriff's office website displays current bookings. The MyCase portal will show the related court case when the prosecutor officially files charges — this usually happens within 48–72 hours after the arrest.

If you need a copy of a booking record that is not available online, submit a public records request directly to the sheriff's office. The Indiana Judicial Branch: Public Records page explains the general procedure for obtaining court documents in the state. For a state-level criminal history check, there is a limited Indiana State Police criminal history search covering felonies and Class A misdemeanors.

Search the Madison Jail Roster by Last Name or Booking Number

The roster supports two main search methods.

Search by Last Name

  1. Enter the detainee's last name in the search field (or use Ctrl+F on the roster page).
  2. If necessary, add the first name to narrow the results — this is especially useful for common last names like Smith or Johnson.
  3. Check the spelling. One letter can completely change the result.

Search by Booking Number

If you know the booking number, enter it in the appropriate field. This method provides an exact result without extraneous matches.

Practical Tips

  • Try spelling variations if the last name might have alternative transliteration or a hyphen.
  • Partial matches do not work on all platforms — start with the full last name.
  • If the search yields no results, it could mean several things: the person has been released, transferred to another facility, or the data has not yet been entered into the system.

When a name does not appear in the roster, call the jail directly. The staff will confirm whether the person is in custody or suggest where they might have been transferred. If the person has been transferred to the state correctional system, use the IDOC search.

Jail Roster Updates and Search Limitations in Madison

The Madison County inmate roster is updated periodically throughout the day, but it is not a real-time system. There can be a delay of several hours to a full business day between the actual booking and the appearance of the record in the online roster, depending on staff workload and time of day.

Here are the main limitations to be aware of:

  • Delay after arrest. Night or weekend arrests sometimes appear in the roster only the next morning.
  • Record disappearance after release. When a person is released on bail, by court order, or after serving a sentence — their record is removed from the current roster. The roster only shows those currently in custody.
  • Not an archive. The roster does not keep a history of all past bookings. To search for old records, contact the sheriff's office or submit a public records request.
  • Data entry errors. The last name may be recorded incorrectly during booking, complicating the search.

To track changes in the status of a specific inmate, register with Indiana SAVIN — the system will send automatic notifications upon transfer or release. If you need an official document about a past arrest, contact the circuit court clerk or submit a request directly to the jail.
